Takeaway outlets are booming as a result of a broader trend for consuming convenience food. The US's cash-rich, time-poor society welcomes anything that makes the current fast pace of living easier to manage. Many consumers cite staying at home with a takeaway meal and a DVD as their prime leisure choice, on both weeknights and weekends. Demand for the well-established styles, including fried fish, Indian and Chinese takeaways, appears to be static and in some areas may even be in decline. A broader range of establishments have entered the takeaway market as a result, with numerous Japanese, Thai and Italian restaurants now offering a takeaway option in addition to their sit-in service.
